Hi everyone and welcome to the site! GreenWave is back for the new year, our meetings areTuesdays at 7:30. A heads up to anyone interested in joining, you do get VOLUNTEER HOURS, which can't be bad. Check out the meetings section for more, and the our mandate to find out what we're all about.
Our bulbs we planted downtown in the fall will soon be blooming, so keep an eye out- particularily around the post office.
Good News!!! More T- shirts have been ordered! They are made with 100% organic cotton (from the sustainable edition line at American Apparel), and come in Men's and Women's sizes. Members will get a shirt to sport during public events and fundraisers, and any time. It was fundraising that paid for these shirts- way to go! For anyone interested, the organic shirts are at very reasonable prices, but only one design for m/w right now.
Our fundraising is also being used now for our sign campaign! The design for our signs is made at last and I will try to get it scanned onto the site, but for now you'll have to be patient...if you really want to take a look call me, Hannah, because we are still definately looking for any criticisms, etc. We should expect to see the signs good to go within the month if all goes well. A big THANK YOU to all who have help out Greenwave so far, the donations and sales from compost and buttons, and TYPS for providing us with so many fundraising opportunities- it has all helped us get things like this off the ground!
We, as the youth of Mississippi Mills, are dedicated to creating a sustainable community by: · Promoting sustainable solutions! · Encouraging sustainability based decision making! · Contributing to a healthy community! · Supporting natural ecosystems! · Working with other local environmental agencies! · Making partnerships! · Demonstrating responsible lifestyle choices!
By stepping into a formalized group we are able to channel our hopes for an environmentally sustainable future into action. We want to promote environmental awareness by setting good examples and providing solutions that will support change in our community.
GreenWave hosts April's TYPS potluck! It will be held on April 1st at the Old Town Hall beginning at 5:30, and after dinner there will be a screening of "Who Killed the Electric Car?". All are welcome to join us there!
· MEETINGS - We normally meets every Tuesday at TYPS ( Almonte) at 7:30 until about 8:30. All youth welcome, drop in when you can to check it out. Please call ahead at 613-256-8485 to make sure that we are meeting that week, or for any time changes. Drop in any time at TYPS, (79 Bridge Street), there's always stuff to do when you're there.
· WALKING SIGNS - We are making signs that have statistics (ex. Calories burnt, distance, gas money saved, carbon emissions spared, etc) to promote the benefits of walking. These signs are designed to be located in frequented areas around Almonte, and be related to other common places/landmarks (Point A to Point B) We live in a small town, and everything is in a relatively close proximity and easily in walking distance. By promoting walking and it’s convenience, we are giving alternatives to driving across town. Thus, there will be less carbon emissions, and healthier people. Walking also gives us the opportunity to spend time outdoors and appreciate Almonte’s natural biodiversity. We encourage everyone to take a walk, and keep an eye out for our signs! We are also hoping to have some of these stats on our website, they’re coming soon…
- BUSINESS INVENTORY-this is an idea we've been brewing for a while, we're planning a checklist of environmental solutions and sending a copy to all of Almonte's businesses. Factors like recycling, energy efficiency, compost, recyclable bags and merchandise wil all be taken into account, as well as any innovative ideas we'd love to hear about. This chart will make itself visisble in local papers or other means in hopes of encouraging an environmentally conscious community. We also feel it is a good idea to support the businesses who are pushing to make a change, and provide the others with some good solutions for stores and our homes.
An update on the Guerilla Gardening- We got a whole bunch of bulbs from Patrice's for half price, so thank... read more
